Scots dog owners warned of 'highly contagious' deadly stomach bug outbreak

Scots dog owners are being warned of a 'highly contagious' and potentially deadly stomach bug outbreak in Glasgow.

Vets are treating more pooches for gastroenteritis in recent weeks.

Gastroenteritis is a general term for irritation of the stomach and guts, causing issues such as vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, stomach pain and dehydration.

It is unknown if specific areas are being hit harder by the outbreak.

Owners are being advised to rest their mutts if suffering symptoms and phone vets if they don't clear within a couple of days.

A source in the city's southside said: "Vets do not know where it is coming from but they are seeing five to six dogs with it per day!

"Some needing to be hospitalised.. It is highly contagious between dogs and if not caught quickly can be potentially fatal.

"My wee poodle contracted it and was really very ill... It started on Friday and she needed to be hospitalised on Sunday.

"Thankfully she is getting a bit better.. Please do not ignore these signs.. I do not mean to scaremonger but it is a very very serious issue."

Thomas Underwood, Senior Vet at Glasgow Shamrock Street PDSA Pet Hospital, said they had seen an increase in cases recently.

He told the Daily Record: “We're not able to confirm exact numbers, but the veterinary teams at our Glasgow Pet Hospitals believe they have seen an increase in gastroenteritis cases in dogs in recent weeks.

"In the vast majority of cases the symptoms have been mild and most dogs have recovered quickly with basic treatment - PDSA has some advice on its website on how to help.

"If the vomiting doesn't stop within a day or two, or you are concerned for any reason, just call your vet for advice."
