Scots dog owner traumatised after dog scoffs two raw chickens dumped in park

A Scots dog owner was left traumatised after her beloved pooch scoffed two whole raw chickens that had been dumped at a popular park.

Labrador- Spaniel cross Rudy had to be rushed to the vets and kept in overnight after the incident on August 9 at Cathkin Braes park in Glasgow.

Owner Molly said she was traumatised as she watched 10-month-old Rudy devour the raw meat in front of her and feared it could have been poisoned.

It's not the first time Molly has come across raw meat in the park as just two weeks before the incident her partner managed to stop Rudy from eating dumped food, Glasgow Live reports.

She said: "It was such a traumatic and unnecessary thing to have happened.

"It had happened in the same place before, so we stopped going to that area, but after two weeks we thought it could have been an isolated incident and went back after checking the area out ourselves first.

"I took him myself and before I knew it he had yet another whole chicken in his mouth, this time wrapped in thin polythene. He's quite a scavenger, and I was running around trying to get it out of his mouth.

"If a dog gets a whole chicken there isn’t anything that's high value enough to swap it out. He ate the whole thing in front of me, bag and bones, the whole lot, then ran to get off the second one.

"I was immediately worried as I thought there had been isolated incidents of people poisoning chickens and putting them in the woods, so I took him straight to the vet as he had started being sick.

"He had to stay overnight, and the bill was about £700. They had to make sure that he passed it all safely and his intestines didn't get ruptured by any of the small bones. In a way we were lucky they weren't cooked as that would have made the bones all brittle."

Poor Rudy eventually made a recovery, but Molly says it took her longer to recover from what happened.

She posted onto a local group and said that other people had come across the same problem in the area.

"The real question is - why is there so much raw meat in public spaces?" added Molly.

"This has happened in other places too, as I put it on Facebook and people said it happened years back which was found to be a local restaurant disposing of food waste. Another person said they had come across the same in Queen's Park and Rouken Glen.

"It must be a thing that's happening a lot, don’t know what the motives are but something needs to be done.

"It was an expensive, unnecessary and traumatic experience for us. It's just so selfish that people are dumping their raw meat and rubbish into city parks where they know dogs are being walked and people are walking around."

Glasgow City Council has been contacted for comment.
