Scots doctor cleared of sex attack allegations involving two patients

A doctor walked free from court today after being cleared of allegations of sexually assaulting two patients.

Matthew Adam, 36, said “Thank you” after a jury at the High Court in Glasgow found him not guilty on both counts.

It was alleged that Dr Adam had inappropriately touched the women – one aged 26 and the other 47 – while he was examining them.

Dr Adam, who has been a doctor since 2009, said in evidence that he was "absolutely shocked and very upset" after being accused of sexually assaulting the women.

He told the court that he examined both women for abdominal complaints – one in the surgery and one at her home.

The doctor told jurors the examination involved prodding and rubbing of the body from the lower ribs to the patient's pelvic bone.

He insisted saying he "absolutely" did not go further down the body of either woman.

QC Ronnie Rennucci asked Dr Adam if he made contact with the private parts of either woman and he replied: “No.”

The 26-year-old woman claimed in evidence that she "froze" after being inappropriately touched during an examination by Dr Adam.

She alleged that Dr Adam appeared "aroused" during the appointment at a medical centre in Forfar, Angus on January 12, 2015.

She told the court she went to the doctor complaining of stomach cramps. She said he prodded her chest and ribs and added: "He just moved further down and got lower to my belly button and I started to feel uncomfortable."

She then alleged that Dr Adam moved his hand under her trousers where he rubbed and prodded her for "a couple of seconds."

"I didn't say anything, my body just kind of froze. I just felt very uncomfortable."

The woman then claimed Adam pushed his groin against her leg or arm and added: "I looked to see what he was doing and I was shocked with what I saw. I saw that he was aroused in some way."

The 47-year-old woman claimed she was sexually assaulted by Dr Adam while he was examining her at her home on December 6, 2015.

She also alleged that Dr Adam came back unannounced later that day with medication and groped her for a second time.

Dr Adam said he returned with medication due to an error with an NHS driver who was supposed to deliver it.

The jury returned with their not guilty verdicts after deliberating for an hour.

Judge Lord Sandison told Dr Adam: “You have been acquitted of the charges on the indictment."
