Scots ditch hymns for chart hits for funeral music as top 10 songs revealed

Scots are ditching hymns for chart hits when it comes to music for their funeral.

This year’s Scottish Funeral Music Chart does not have one hymn, with people opting for rock anthems and classic pop ballads.

Top of the list, compiled by Co-op Funeralcare, is Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and These are The Days of Our Lives double A-side track, while Bohemian Rhapsody is the third most popular track.

A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum takes the No2 spot, with John Lennon’s Imagine at No4 and 60s ballad Unchained Melody being dubbed the fifth best-loved funeral soundtrack.

David Collingwood, director of funerals for Co-op Funeralcare, said: “We all live such unique lives and funerals should reflect that.

“Each element of a funeral is a very personal decision.

“We’re always encouraging people to be more open about their funeral wishes, making it clear to loved ones what they would want for themselves when the time comes.

"Even knowing what song someone would have wanted can bring such comfort at an incredibly hard time.’’

The research also reveals how music affects the mood at a funeral.

Over a third of Scots (36 per cent) said it makes mourners feel sad and 27 per cent said it makes people happy.
