Scots dementia OAP who sang through care home gates records second single

A Scots dementia pensioner who recorded a charity single is back on the microphone after music 'saved her' during lockdown.

We told how a video of Margaret Mackie performing Frank Sinatra's My Way at her care home in Edinburgh went viral in late 2019.

Margaret recorded the song professionally at a local studio, raising money for Alzheimer's UK.

The 83-year-old had to stick to strict isolation rules amid the coronavirus pandemic, devastating her loved ones who couldn't see her for weeks.

But Margaret has kept busy in isolation, singing Jim Reeves hit, I Love You Because down the phone and through the iron gates of Northcare Suites Care Home to her daughter, Mairi Hunter.

Now she's recorded her new favourite song remotely, to help comfort other heartbroken Scots families ripped apart in the wake of the outbreak.

Mairi, 55, told the Record: "I've cried many times during all of this.

"While we've been really lucky and mum's care home has been fine, it's been really difficult.

"Most days mum would singe I Love You Because down the phone or through the iron gates of the care home to me.

"She couldn't understand why I couldn't touch her, it was awful."

Mairi said singing has kept her songbird mum going.

"Of course mum, like many, has deteriorated because of the lack of social interaction.

"But I think singing saved her and kept her going."

With the help of a local recording studio, technology and care home staff, Margaret was able to record the ballad professionally.

It's been uploaded to her official Facebook fan page, created in the wake of her previous hit, for others enduring a similar ordeal.

"So many families have had a tough time with relatives in care homes," Mairi said.

"It's all about raising awareness.

"If the song can brighten up someone's day and make them feel less alone then it's worth it."
