Cameron Menzies hopes to be back at the oche “very soon” after being taken ill on stage during his World Matchplay second-round match against Ross Smith in Blackpool.
The Scot – who had knocked out world number two Luke Humphries in the previous round – was leading 2-1 during Wednesday’s opening match at the Winter Gardens, but appeared to become unsteady on his feet and had to be helped off the stage by Smith and the referee.
Menzies “experienced high blood pressure, which caused him to feel dizzy and subsequently faint”, the PDC said, and had to forfeit the match.
He was checked over by medical staff at the venue before being cleared to return to his hotel.
And Menzies posted an update on social media on Thursday afternoon as his recovery continues.
“Just a quick message to say thank you to everyone for all the messages,” Menzies wrote on Facebook.
“Unfortunately, I wasn’t well enough to continue the match. It’s obviously not how I wanted my World Matchplay to end, especially after playing some of the best darts of my career over the last few weeks.
“I’m grateful to the medical team for looking after me, to Ross for checking on me, and to everyone at the Winter Gardens for their support. A big good luck to Ross for the rest of the tournament. I wish him all the best.
“Hopefully I’ll be back doing what I love very soon. Thanks again for all your support, it really does mean a lot.”
Smith will play Gerwyn Price in the quarter-finals on Friday.
