Scots dad's DFS shock as glass table 'explodes' after shelling out £700

A Scots dad is fuming after his DFS glass table 'exploded' and 'shattered' all over his dining area.

When Malcolm Nicholson heard a 'loud bang like an explosion' while watching a Six Nations match on Saturday February 5, he thought something had happened to his French Doors due to strong winds outside.

But the firefighter was stunned to find his table was completely decimated, with shards of glass covering the dining area.

It was a lucky escape for the 51-year-old and his son, 21, who were sat right next to the 'explosion'.

Malcom and his wife Joan, 56, contacted DFS straight away who advised they were 'looking into the matter'.

But the couple, from Skelmorlie in North Ayrshire, were incensed when DFS allegedly said on Wednesday the manufacturers were taking 'no responsibility' for what happened.

Enraged Malcolm, who forked out over £700 on the table just 14 months ago, fears for other Scots who purchased the item and what more damage could be done.

The dad-of-one and stepdad-of-two told the Record: "I was watching Ireland v Wales in the Six Nations just along from our dining table, in the living room.

"All of a sudden we heard this loud bang, just like an explosion.

"When I realised it was the table I was stunned, there was glass everywhere."

The table was absolutely decimated at the couple's home in Skelmorlie, North Ayrshire (HANDOUT)

Shocking video footage shows the extent of the damage.

The entire glass top of the table is destroyed with the carpet blanketed with shards of glass.

Shelves of the adjacent unit are covered in glass too, as well as the arm of a swivel chair shown in the images - which is where Malcom's son was seated.

The glass topper sat on four chrome legs (HANDOUT)

Malcolm added: "I sat at the table earlier to do a bit of work on the laptop but that was it.

"Nothing was on it other than a note pad and a pen.

"We bought it in late 2020 and have had no issues with it before. We keep it clean so would know if there were any cracks."

Shards of glass were left covering the carpet (HANDOUT)

The item was part of a costly DFS haul for the Nicholsons who renovated their living and dining areas in 2020 - splurging between £4,000 and £5,000 on a couch and some units.

"DFS manufacturers taking no responsibility for this is just staggering," Malcom said.

"To think how much money we spent on DFS just over a year ago and now we're left with nothing.

"This could have been so much worse, people could own this table and have babies or pets at home.

"My son was sat really close, glass could have gone in this eye.

"We're really disappointed."

A spokeswoman from DFS told the Record: "Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

"Health and safety is a key priority for DFS and we have escalated Mr Nicholson’s complaint to our product quality team who are currently looking into this.”
