Scots dad forced to shield toddler as two large dogs 'mauled chihuahua to death'

A terrified Scots dad had to shield his two-year-old son as two large dogs mauled a chihuahua to death in the middle of the street.

Scott McLaren had just dropped off his wife at her eyelash appointment on Walter Scott Avenue in Edinburgh when the shocking attack took place at roughly 11.15am on Wednesday March 22. According to Edinburgh Live, he was taking his son to a nearby Scotmid for a drink when they heard a horrifying scream.

It was then Scott witnessed the two pitbull looking dogs attacking a much smaller pooch, believed to be a chihuahua. He said the owner desperately tried to pull the two canines off the defenceless pup, but was unable to control them.

Scott immediately shielded his little boy so he couldn't see the disturbing scene, while a brace van driver rushed to the aid of the chihuahua - however, it is now understood that the pet sadly died. He said the owner of the dangerous dogs immediately took full responsibility and gave his details to staff int he Scotmid store, who then contacted police.

“I was taking my wife to get her lashes done on Walter Scott Avenue in the Inch,” Scott explained.

“We heard a scream but had our one-year-old son in the car and didn’t see what it was at first. I parked thinking nothing of it and took my son towards Scotmid on Walter Scott Avenue for a drink, beside there I saw the two big pitbull looking dogs attacking a much smaller dog, which looked to me like a chihuahua.

“They angled in from both sides and the owner couldn’t control them at all. My priority was getting my one-year-old son away and not letting him see anything. I saw a local van driver pick up the chihuahua which looked dead and put him in his van.

“The owner of the dangerous dogs left his details at Scotmid and allowed me to take pictures of him and his dogs for evidence if needed. He kept repeating to everyone ‘I’ve said I will take all responsibility’ but he did not appear to look guilty for what had happened with his dogs.

“I shared a status which so far has been shared over 600 times, I didn’t expect that, I just wanted everyone in the area to know about the dogs so their dogs and of course kids in the area were safe. They looked in a frenzy and I felt so bad for the chihuahua and his family, thankfully there were no kids there at the time.

“I feel the owner has to take responsibility for having the dogs act in such a manner and I hope the authorities act accordingly as the dog and his family deserve justice. It was heartbreaking, the wee dog stood no chance.

“It was horrific. I just wanted my son away and safe. I've been around dogs all my life but I’ve never seen something so cruel.”

Police Scotland has been approached for comment.
