Scots cyclist speaks for nation with perfectly timed plunge during live report on no-deal Brexit vote

An Edinburgh cyclist spoke for the nation when he made a ride-on appearance during a live report on the BBC News at 10.

He appeared on screen during Sarah Smith's live report from Edinburgh following last night's crucial vote at Westminster which saw Boris Johnson's Government defeated by a cross-party alliance.

MPs voted by 328 to 301 in favour of a motion put forward by opposition parties and rebel Tory MPs which sought to prevent a no-deal Brexit.

During the News at 10 coverage, Huw Edwards cut to a live feed from Edinburgh and asked Smith about Scottish reaction to the vote.

As Smith explained Nicola Sturgeon's position standing outside the Holyrood Parliament, a hooded cyclist was seen riding in from the left of shot.

He then tumbled straight into a water feature pool - inadvertently mirroring the views of many that the country is heading for a political disaster with no firm plan in place for leaving the EU.

A straight faced Smith continued her report, unaware of or ignoring the drama going on behind her.

She told the camera: "Nicola Sturgeon argues because Scotland didn't vote for Brexit of any kind then Scottish voters should have the right to choose whether they want an independent future.

"If we go into an early general election, if the SNP do perform as well as they hoped they might in that election, then that could really strengthen their case for another independence referendum as well."

Just before the feed cut back to Huw in the studio, the cyclist could be seen emerging unscathed and laughing from the water.
