Scots Covid-19 tester struck down with killer virus at Glasgow Airport

A Covid-19 tester at one of Scotland’s main test sites - has tested positive for the killer bug.

The steward at the Glasgow Airport testing facility - dubbed a “shambles” by fellow workers - has been struck down with the virus triggering widespread panic among other staff at the site.

A whistleblower told the Daily Record the facility was failing to adhere to strict safety guidelines and was a “shambles”.

The source also said that workers who came into contact with the infected steward have still not been sent home.

The source added: “It has been a nightmare.

"How ironic that a tester gets the virus? The man tested positive but that was it, nothing else was done.

"No-one else was sent home and there were no other measures introduced.

“They are always quite busy but it is quite lax when it comes to health and safety measures. The place is a bit of shambles.

"People don’t stick to the social distancing guidelines and it just seems to be hotspot waiting to happen.”

In April, Glasgow Airport’s long-stay car park was transformed into a drive-thru mobile testing facility for frontline NHS staff only to support the country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 17-acre car park site on Abbotsinch Road was part of a series of measures to increase testing and response to the spread of Covid-19.

The facility was originally introduced to test frontline NHS staff only but now, anyone in Scotland who is self-isolating because they are showing symptoms can be tested.

A spokesman for the UK Government’s Department of Health and Social Care, which runs the facility, confirmed to the Record that a steward had tested positive but said they would not comment on individual cases.

He said: “We have measures in place to maintain health and safety at sites including stringent social distancing rules, site cleaning multiple times a day to adhere to strict standards of hygiene, and the use of Personal Protective Equipment in line with the latest guidance.”
