Scots courier who shifted drugs worth half a million pounds dies in prison

A notorious Scots drugs courier has died in prison.

Alan Hastings passed away at HMP Grampian in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire on January 21.

The cause of the 53-year-old's death is unknown at this stage.

Hastings from Kintore, Aberdeenshire, was jailed after using his haulage firm to transport more than half a million pounds worth of heroin and cocaine.

The convict delivered a package of heroin, worth up to £487,000, to a property in Dundee in 2018.

Hastings' next offence was transporting £100,000 worth of cocaine to Larkhall, South Lanarkshire.

In 2019 he pled guilty to being involved in the sale and supply of illegal substances.

He appeared at the High Court in Glasgow.

The drug hauler was imprisoned for 63 months in August that year.

The Scottish Prison Service confirmed Hastings' death and that Police Scotland had been informed.

A report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

A Fatal Accident Enquiry will be carried out in due course.

The SPS released a statement on Hastings' death.

It read: "Alan Hastings, 53, a prisoner from HMP Grampian has died on January 21, 2021.

"He was convicted at Glasgow High Court in 2019.

"Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

"A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course."
