Scots couple win battle to have neighbour's massive 36ft hedge chopped down

A couple who claimed their neighbour’s 36ft hedge was making their lives a misery have won a battle to have it chopped down.

George McMillan, 72, and his wife had been locked in a lengthy dispute with Edward Kelly over the towering cypress leylandii between their homes.

They claimed their bedroom at the property in Paisley was kept in constant darkness.

The couple turned to Renfrewshire Council under high hedge legislation when they failed to get Kelly to chop them back.

The hedge is massive (DR)

The council ordered the trees be cut to ground level but the McMillans argued more was needed as they also formed part of the hedge and appealed to the Government.

Officials have now widened the order to include felling three leylandii and a fir tree and keeping two rhododendrons and a bamboo shrub trimmed to just over 6ft.

Government reporter Philip Barton said the measures “would be the most reasonable course of action”.
