Scots couple stole from pensioners and NHS nurse in crime-spree ending in police chase

A thieving couple who targeted the elderly and NHS staff during a five-day crime spree have been jailed for more than three years.

Guy Weston and Natalie Hawes stole jewellery and a nurse's bingo winnings before the spree was ended when Weston led police on a high speed chase in a stolen car.

Weston was jailed for 22 months and banned from driving for two years, while Hawes was jailed for 15 months at Dundee Sheriff Court.

Hawes, 26, a prisoner of HMP Polmont, admitted stealing a handbag, a purse, £190 in cash, a bag of crystals and three crystal angels from Inveresk Gardens in Dundee in February last year.

Fiscal depute Gavin Burton told the court the home was owned by a nurse.

She had heard banging after going to bed but thought it was coming from a neighbour's property.

The nurse found her front door lying open at 6am and her handbag containing £190 of bingo winnings was missing, along with crystals and three crystal angels of sentimental value.

Hawes was found with the nurse's property when she was traced by police in connection with another matter.

She also admitted acting with Weston to break into an address on Elm Street, Errol, on 28 February 2020 and stealing iPhones, watches, car keys, wallets, a gold ring, an e-cigarette, cameras, a Kindle, a purse, a bracelet, a jacket, tobacco, and iPads.

Weston, 38, a prisoner of HMP Perth, pleaded guilty to breaking into 72-year-old Ian Wilson's yard on 26 February and stealing a BMW 5 series, a Mini Cooper, and other items.

Mr Wilson said: "I'm very pleased to hear that he's admitted it and he'll be receiving a prison sentence. I just want to put it all behind me now.

"I couldn't believe how brazen he was. The cameras picked him up looking under doormats and windows. I don't really think he was that bothered."

Weston was later seen staggering out of one of the stolen cars at the Tesco petrol station on Riverside Drive.
