Scots council tenants investigated for renting their homes on AirBnB

Council tenants in Scotland have been probed for potentially renting their homes out on AirBnB.

Local authorities have carried out five investigations in the past three years after reports of tenants putting their homes on short-term holiday let sites.

The figures, revealed following a Freedom of Information request, come after a council tenant in London was fined £100,000 and evicted after subletting on AirBnB .

There were four investigations into potential holiday lets in Scotland in 2018/19 - two in Highland, and one each in East Dunbartonshire and Stirling.

That compares to one in Highland in 2017/18 and none in 2016/17.

All of these investigations led to warning letters to tenants being issued.

Across Britain, councils reported carrying out 55 investigations into potential holiday subletting over the past three years.

Numbers of investigations are rising - there were 24 in 2018/19, up from 15 in 2017/18, and 11 in 2016/17.

The rising number of probes into short-term subletting may reflect councils being more aware of a potential problem.
