Scots could be banned from travelling to America for months

Scot can expect to be banned from travelling to the US for months under coronavirus restrictions.

Donald Trump ordered a travel ban in March as part of a contingency plan to tackle the coronavirus crisis.

Dr Anthony Fauci, America’s top public health official, said current restrictions preventing UK citizens from entering the US could now last until a vaccine is developed, The Mirror reports.

The infectious disease expert said the lifting of the current ban would be “more likely months than weeks”.

“It's going to be really wait and see,” he said.

“I don't think there's going to be an immediate pull back for those kinds of restrictions.

“My feeling, looking at what's going on with the infection rate, I think it's more likely measured in months rather than weeks.”

Dr Fauci said the US had been successful in reducing the outbreak in major cities including New York, Chicago, Detroit and New Orleans.

However, several states trying to reopen such a Texas are seeing "early indications [that] infections are higher than previously."

Donald Trump's travel ban affects almost four million Britons who visit the US each year.

The vast majority are holidaymakers, but tens of thousands fly across the Atlantic for business.

The ban prohibits anyone from entering the US from the UK unless they are a US citizen, a green card holder, have an American spouse or UK government official.
