Scots cops swoop on cars at Asda and search them as part of 'drug dealing probe'

Stunned shoppers looked on as police swooped on two vehicles - one with a child in the back - at a supermarket car park.

Two men were then cuffed by officers and kept apart while the motors - a BMW and a Golf - were searched.

The drama unfolded at Asda in Toryglen, in Glasgow ’s southside, on Sunday, as scores of shoppers queued outside the store.

It is thought the raid was connected to an investigation into drug dealing in the area - and a quantity of cash was recovered by officers.

One told us: "The way the police vehicles were positioned, it looked like they had been deliberately parked to block both vehicles in.

"I saw a wee girl, who could only have been about six, sitting in the police van with an officer, while the man who had been driving the car was in handcuffs.

"The other man involved had been driving a Golf.

"You couldn't miss what was going on because everybody was in a long queue outside because of social distancing.

"The wee girl looked calm and OK. The police spent ages searching the vehicles on the spot.

"Things were being removed from them and placed on the ground.

"This incident happened at about 3pm when the supermarket was busy and it lasted at least an hour.

"One of the men in handcuffs looked to be in his 40s, while the other guy looked to be in his 20s."

Another witness said: "These vehicles were definitely targeted by the police vans which arrived in the car park.

"There were four police vans at the scene from what I saw.

"It really isn't helping the situation at the moment when there is stuff like this going on when people are leaving the house to get their essentials.

"Having said that, there were probably less children around than there would have been normally on a Sunday afternoon because of the restrictions.

"This looked like a targeted search. The police searching the vehicles were wearing gloves."

The coronavirus lockdown has meant changes in some criminal behaviour.

Places that are normally busy with people are now not so, and they may be viewed as unsafe by people with something to hide.

A police spokesperson confirmed the operation and added: "A quantity of cash has been seized and inquiries are ongoing."

Witnesses said police led the child into one of their vans as the men were detained at the scene and the cars searched.
