Scots cops probing violent street shooting want to track down feared gangland boss

Police investigating a street shooting want to speak to a feared gangland boss.

Detectives want to track down David "Mincey" McKenzie following the attack on Brian McIlear outside his home.

McIlear, 31, is the former partner of McKenzie's daughter Emma, 29.

The couple separated last year, sources have said.

Scaffolder McIlear was shot in Barony Drive in Glasgow's Baillieston just after midnight on Saturday..

He frantically chapped his neighbours begging them to call police.

Scene photos show a parked car smeared with blood.

McKenzie was linked to the murder of thug George Redmond who was shot dead outside a pub in 2008.

No one has ever been convicted of his murder.

McKenzie was jailed for six years and eight months in 2013 for his role attempting to transport cocaine worth £1million.

Police bugged his Mercedes and Mazda cars and recorded him discussing drug deals.

A source said: "Police have been going round everyone who knows McKenzie and McIlear.

"McIlear split up with Emma last year and it was a bad break-up.

"She is close to her dad and turned to him when she was upset.

“She took McIlear back into the house for a few months but their relationship was always on a knife-edge. They seemed to always get back together and split up.”

McKenzie is one of the country's most notorious gangland figures and has links to crime gangs in Europe and Northern Ireland.

Officers carried out months of surveillance on him and his gang, staking out properties and bugging cars, listening in as they spoke in code about drug deals.

They linked him to a flat in Glasgow’s Dennistoun that was used as a makeshift drug factory to bulk out drugs for sale. He met Liverpool gangsters in upmarket hotels such as Glasgow’s Radisson Blu.

He fled to Spain in 2011 but was arrested following a flight from Malaga to Belfast, where he is understood to have paramilitary connections.

Redmond was gunned down outside Glasgow's Waldorf Bar by a hitman thought to have come over from Belfast.

The 42-year-old had been linked to drug dealing, extortion and a string of violent attacks on rivals before he was targeted.

The assassin opened fire from a stolen Porsche Cayenne outside the city centre bar on October 6, 2008.

Nine shots were fired, killing Redmond and injuring John Maguire, who spent eight days in hospital.

The pair had been nicknamed the Pulp Fiction team by friends, who likened them to hitmen in the Quentin Tarantino crime movie.

The murder was believed to be linked to a knife attack Redmond carried out on Mincey in a Duke Street pub in 2006, which left him fighting for life.

Scaffolding firm boss McIlear was shot at around 12.10am on January 15.

Neighbours called an ambulance and he was taken to hospital where he is understood to still be receiving treatment for his wounds.

Police Scotland said inquiries into the shooting were "ongoing".

Emma McKenzie could not be reached for comment.
