Scots cops go on car clamping and towing spree after complaints about parked vehicles

Edinburgh cops went on a car clamping spree in Leith after residents complained about vehicles in their area.

Community officers in Edinburgh have also been towing cars as part of a joint enforcement operation targeting untaxed vehicles.

Local police joined forces with a team from the DVLA for the day of action in the north of the city on Wednesday.

Four vehicles were seized, four fixed penalty notices were issued and nine vehicles were clamped.

Edinburgh Police said: "Leith Community Cops, responding to local complaints, have been supporting @DVLAgovuk conducting a joint enforcement operation in the Leith area in relation to untaxed vehicles.

"This resulted in four vehicles being seized, nine clamped and four fixed penalty tickets issued."

Earlier this year it was revealed that nearly 590,000 enforcement actions had been undertaken against untaxed cars in the UK in 2019 - with 24,000 of those in Edinburgh and 34,375 in Glasgow.

The DVLA use number plate recognition cameras to help quickly detect which cars are not taxed.
