Scots cops break up group of protesters hours after new Covid restrictions kick in

Police were called to break up a protest outside a Scots home - just hours after tougher measures came in to force to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Yesterday, entering businesses to purchase takeaway food and drinks was scrapped, as was non-essential click-and-collect services and drinking alcohol in public outdoors.

And within hours of the new rules taking effect, a group of people gathered outside a property in Falkirk to stage a protest.

Riot police were spotted at the scene, in Gairdoch Street, in the town's Bainsford area, while three police cars and three vans were also in attendance.

One local said: "I opened the door to take the dog out a walk and all I could see was a massive group.

"They were all shouting and screaming."

Police Scotland has today confirmed officers were called to break up the gathering, which locals said involved as many as 20 people.

A spokesperson said: "Around 4.20pm on Saturday, January 16, 2021, officers were made aware of a planned protest outside a property on Gairdoch Street in Bainsford, Falkirk.

"A small group of people gathered and officers attended.

"Advice was given to all concerned and the group was dispersed."
