Scots cops believe novelty keyring could help solve 26-year old murder

Scots cops believe identifying the owner of a novelty keyring found at a murder scene over two decades ago could finally lead to a breakthrough in the case.

Shona Stevens, 31, was found on a footpath near the read of Alder Green in the Bourtreehill Park area of Irvine on 10 November 1994.

She had sustained serious head injuries during a fatal attack and died in hospital just a few days later.

Now, Police Scotland are asking for details about a novelty keyring which was found at the scene during the initial forensic examination.

Detective Inspector Fraser Normansell of the major investigation team, said: “We know the item didn’t belong to Shona and, while we can’t be sure of its origins, we believe it may hold significance to this case.

“Although it was found almost 27 years ago, it’s very distinctive and could prove vital to our enquiries. I’m urging anyone with information to come forward and help us get justice for Shona.”

Shortly before her death, the mum-of-one had attended the Co-op shop in Bourtreehill Shopping Centre which she left on foot.

Shona was last seen on Towerlands Road around 1.10pm and her body was found roughly 200 yards from her home at about 1.20pm.

DI Normansell continued: “I’m asking anyone who believes they recognise this item or who has any information, no matter how small, to please get in touch.

“We are committed to getting Shona’s devastated family the answers they deserve.”

The Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) has been set up to encourage members of the public to submit information.

The public has access to a form which reaches the major incident teams based at the Scottish Crime Campus directly.

Alternatively, anyone with information can contact the dedicated inquiry team on 01563 505172 or Police Scotland on 101.

Crimestoppers can also be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
