Scots cops arrest suspect during probe into numerous suspicious fires

A suspect has been arrested by police as part of an investigation into a number of suspicious fires.

The 22-year-old was detained by Police Scotland officers as part of a probe into wilful fire-raisings.

The man was arrested over a vehicle being torched in Coltness Avenue, in the North Lanarkshire village of Allanton.

A post on the Lanarkshire Police Division Facebook page said the man had been reported to the Procurator Fiscal over the alleged offence.

It also said officers are "continuing enquiries in and around Allanton and the Shotts area regarding a number of other fires".

And it said they are "following positive lines of enquiry after a comprehensive review of CCTV footage and door to door enquiries".

Area Inspector for Shotts, Alan Mulholland said: "Our Officers have received numerous reports of bins being set on fire alongside vehicles and property within Shotts, Allanton and surrounding areas.

"We are following positive lines of enquiry regarding wilful fire-raisings in the area of Shotts and we are working closely with elected members and the local community to identify individuals and take action against them.

"I am appealing for information from anyone in the community who has witnessed any fire setting, or may have any information to support our ongoing investigations, to please contact 101 asking for the local Officers or call Crimestoppers on 0800555111 anonymously.

"We will continue to investigate historic enquiries from last year in to the New Year and would advise anyone involved to be mindful of our efforts to get to the bottom of their offending and to expect a knock at the door should we uncover their involvement."
