Scots city most likely place in UK to see a white Christmas this year

Aberdeen is the most likely place in the UK to see a white Christmas this year, according to bookmakers.

The Granite City is 7/4 to experience snowfall on December 25 - which means that there is a 36% chance of the white stuff landing in the north east.

Experts at Coral have also said that there is a 33% chance of snow in Edinburgh and Glasgow on Christmas Day - with the odds sitting at 2/1.

Forecasters at the Met Office are able to declare a white Christmas if ‘one snowflake is observed falling in the 24 hours of December 25 somewhere in the UK’.

The last widespread white Christmas came in 2010, when snow was reported on the ground at 83% of weather stations in the UK.

And there are high expectations for snow to land on December 25 this year, with the country said to experience a white Christmas on average once every six years.

Average snowfall during December lasts for around 3.9 days - which equates to one dump of the white stuff every week in the last month of the year.

Coral spokesperson Harry Aitkenhead told Gambling.com : “With November looking like it’ll be quite a cold one, there’s every chance all the prices could be cut closer to the time and particularly if we get significant snowfall before Christmas Day.

“We are expecting the usual bets come December time, with this market still proving popular each Christmas with people who like a traditional flutter on snow to fall on the big day.”

The Met Office said that it can accurately forecast the likelihood of snow falling on Christmas Day up to five days before hand.

Forecasters recently changed the definition of a white Christmas due to more people betting on the possibility.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Traditionally we used to use a single location in the country to define a white Christmas, which was the Met Office building in London. However, with the increase in betting on where will see a white Christmas, the number of locations have increased and can now include sites such as Buckingham Palace, Belfast (Aldergrove Airport), Aberdeen (Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen FC), Edinburgh (Castle), Coronation Street in Manchester and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

“We also analyse the data from our observing stations around the UK to provide a complete picture of where snow has fallen or was lying on Christmas Day.”
