Scots church hit with £13k fine over death of pensioner who plummeted 50ft to death

The Catholic Church has been fined £13,400 after a pensioner plummeted 50ft to his death.

Christopher Duffy, 81, was a volunteer at Sacred Heart Church in Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire. He was a key holder and responsible for opening the church.

Construction work to install a lift to a hall had been delayed after the builder discovered pipes which he believed were connected to gas and would have to be removed by a specialist contractor.

Fr John Campell told him they were connected to the water supply and a tank in the loft. It is believed Duffy went to inspect the pipes.

A spokesman for the Archdiocese of Glasgow said: “The Archdiocese wishes to express once more its regret and sorrow.”
