Scots Christmas lights switch-ons scrapped by councils over coronavirus fears

Christmas light switch-ons have been scrapped across Scotland in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Councils have pulled the plug on events in East Lothian, North and South Lanarkshire, Perth and Kinross, South Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and Highland.

It's not just switch-ons that have been axed.

Popular festive events for Scots punters, such as Winter Festival in Perth and the Santa's Grotto in Coatbridge will not get the green light this Christmas.

While Ayr, Paisley and Inverness will still go ahead with adorning their main streets with Christmas lights, official ceremonies to turn them on are off the cards.

In Edinburgh, the world famous Christmas market is planned to open, but on a much smaller scale.

The same applies to the capital's iconic Hogmanay Street party.

East Lothian Council leader Willie Innes said: "There is a greater risk of coronavirus spread as we move into winter and so gathering many local people together for community events, even outdoors, poses a risk to public health."

Perth & Kinross Council said: "We will have Christmas lights, but no ceremony to switch them on."

It comes as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that no more than six people, from no more than tow household, can meet up in pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes.

In Glasgow, East and West Dunbartonshire, North and South Lanarkshire, East Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire, residents cannot visit those from other households indoors.

Exceptions apply to those caring for vulnerable people and those who are part of extended households.
