Scots chef claims his bar has world’s biggest whisky selection beating 'record holders' in USA

A whisky fan has claimed his bar has the world’s biggest selection of our national drink.

Derek Mather believes his collection topples that of a pub in California which holds the official Guinness Book of Records title.

Chef Derek, 46, who runs the Artisan Restaurant in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, has more than 3000 different drams behind the bar.

Meanwhile, the Whiskey House in San Diego – run by Alex Minaev – says it has the most, with 2467 on offer.

It was awarded the prestigious title in January 2019 and will hold it until it is officially contested.

Derek said: “If 2467 whiskies is the current world record then we know we’ve topped it. We have over 3000 whiskies here.

“As far as we and our customers are concerned, the title is rightfully ours.”

But Alex, 48, who claims he now has more than 4000 different drams, said: “Well, you can claim you are the fastest runner at 100m but, until you register that record at the Olympics, it is no more than just a claim.”

A Guinness Book of Records spokesman said: “Any applicant would need to go on our website and go to record applications, where they can apply to set or break a record.”
