Scots charity Social Bite in plea for donations to deliver food to the homeless during coronavirus

Scottish charity Social Bite has issued a desperate appeal for donations so they can deliver food to help the homeless during cornavirus.

Co-founder Josh Littlejohn has been forced to close all five cafes in Scotland - which provide free meals to those in need - as they battle with financial uncertainty during Covid-19.

As thousands stockpile food to self-isolate, major concerns have been raised about how those living on the streets in Scotland will have access to essentials.

And with donations to food banks plummeting, the charity fear those who rely on their social enterprise cafes could be without a vital lifeline.

But the charity say they "thought long and hard" about how they could carry on helping the homeless, families who rely on free school meals and those made redundant due to Covid-19.

The charity is now set to launch a nationwide delivery service backed by the Scottish Government to get supplies out people on the streets in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

They plan to re-deploy kitchen and cafe employees to produce and deliver food to those who need it most during the outbreak.

To avoid staff redundencies, kitchen and cafe employees will be re-deployed to produce and deliver food to those who need them most during the outbreak.

Social Bite is now urging people to donate so they can make 3,000 packs with sandwiches, crisps and fruit as well as hand out soap, toilet roll and medicine in their cafes seven days a week over the next three months.

Social Bite co-founder Josh said: "The homeless and vulnerable people we support on a daily basis at Social Bite will be the worst affected by this crisis.

"Imagine being homeless, having no option to self-isolate or stock up on supplies, with many support services you were relying on closing down.

"Alongside homeless people there will be thousands more people who end up in food poverty, families who were relying on free school meals who no longer have access and those who have just been made redundant with no immediate access to benefits."
