Scots celebs pay tribute to the Queen as nation remembers her incredible 70-year reign

Scots from across the entertainment, sporting, and political world have joined the nation in paying tribute to the Queen's incredible 70-year reign. Her Majesty passed away peacefully at Balmoral on Thursday afternoon and tributes have poured in marking her incredible reign.

As 12 days of national mourning begins, famous Scots have led tributes to the longest serving Sovereign, who is succeeded by her son, King Charles III.

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling said: "Some may find the outpouring of British shock and grief at this moment quaint or odd, but millions felt affection and respect for the woman who uncomplainingly filled her constitutional role for seventy years.

"Most British people have never known another monarch, so she’s been a thread winding through all our lives. She did her duty by the country right up until her dying hours, and became an enduring, positive symbol of Britain all over the world. She’s earned her rest."

Decorated Olympian Sir Chris Hoy remembered his own encounters with the Queen, saying: "I share the sadness and sorrow of all Britons and many others around the world in mourning the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. I had the pleasure of meeting Her Majesty on a number of occasions and always admired her tremendous dedication and absolute commitment to her role, as well as the generosity and compassion she offered to all those she met.

"Her Majesty The Queen devoted her to our country, guiding us through so many historically significant moments with great leadership. My thoughts are with the Royal family at this very sad time."

Broadcaster Lorraine Kelly added: "So sad. What a life of service and duty. incredibly honoured to have met her. Always been there my whole life. Thoughts with her family and everyone who loved her."

She also described the Queen as a "bad ass", after discovering the monarch was the only person allowed to drive in the UK without a licence.

Telly chef Gordon Ramsay shared a tribute on Instagram. He wrote: "You will be so missed, a truly remarkable woman who gave so much to us all in Great Britain and worldwide. So humble, selfless and giving. Someone who made such an impact on us all over her decades of service. Rest in perfect peace your Majesty."

Former Scottish Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who was one of the 15 leaders of the UK the Queen witnesses, said: "The United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and the entire world are joined together in mourning this evening. HM Queen Elizabeth II served this country to the last. I offer my sincere condolences to the Royal Family. May she rest in peace."
