Scots cargo ship crashes with Danish container vessel as searches underway for missing people

A Scots cargo ship has crashed into a Danish container vessel with a desperate rescue mission for two missing people underway.

The Scot Carrier, which was destined for Montrose, is thought to be functional with its crew safe but the Karin Hoej has capsized.

The incident took place between Ystad, Sweden and the nearby island of Bornholm at around 3.30am on Monday, December 13.

Screaming was reported at 4:45am, according to Jonas Franzen, communications manager at the Swedish Maritime Administration.

At least 10 lifeboats and a helicopter are at the scene although efforts from crews have been hampered by the early morning darkness.

Although the collision in Swedish territorial waters, Denmark is also helping with the rescue.

While the Scot Carrier has recently provided updates, the Karin Hoej has not sent an update in more than four hours.

A spokesperson for Scotline, which owns the Scot Carrier, said: "Scotline can confirm that they have an interest on the Scot Carrier.

"However, for the time being Scotline are not in a position to comment further since the details of the incident are currently under investigation and still ongoing.

"The master, ship, crew and company are assisting and complying with local authorities as required."

Registered to Inverness, the Scot Carrier recently left Salacgriva, Latvia, and was set to arrive in Montrose at 5pm on Wednesday.

The Karin Hoej was travelling between Sodertalje, Sweden and Nykøbing Falster, Denmark and had been due at noon on Tuesday.

The cause of the collision has not been confirmed but could possibly be the result of poor visibility caused by fog.
