Scots carer paid £273 for 'damp' hotel room with 'nicotine stains' on walls

A Scots carer has claimed he splashed out £273 on a two-night stay at the Adelphi Hotel but was left disappointed by "nicotine stains" on the walls and "smelt of damp".

Ryan Caine, who is originally from Liverpool but now lives in Glasgow, had been on a visit to the city with his dad - who he cares for.

The 27-year-old claims he paid a sum of £136.50 a night at the hotel, staying there from Saturday, September 25 to Sunday, September 26.

Ryan said that after a visit to Stoke-on-Trent, the pair decided to visit Liverpool as Ryan's dad had never been and the 27-year-old could visit his mum.

But he was left unimpressed by what he found in his hotel room, reports Liverpool Echo.

Photos of the hotel room show the fire alarm suspended from the ceiling with the wire exposed and yellow stains on the walls.

Speaking to the ECHO, Ryan said: "From Stoke-on-Trent we decided to go to Liverpool, [my dad] has never been to Liverpool and I was seeing my ma.

"We got the Adelphi for two nights, £273 and it is meant to be a good hotel.

"When we got to the hotel our hotel door was open before we could even put our key in it.

"Then when we got in it, the fire alarm was suspended from the ceiling and there were exposed wires.

"The walls had nicotine stains and so did the ceiling.

"There were cracks on the bathroom tiles and on the ceiling and there was damp on the ceiling in the bedroom too."

Ryan claims that, despite paying hundreds for his stay, he was told by staff they could not provide a fan after he requested one for their room.

The 27-year-old said: "There were no fridge, no fan and it was hot because it was the end of September.

"We went downstairs and asked for a fan and they said 'sorry we don't provide that' and for the price we paid for, you'd expect to have a fan.

"Every other place we stayed in had a fan if we asked for one they would give you one or there would be one in the room.

"They said there would be clean bedding or towels in the wardrobe - there was nothing in the wardrobe."

Ryan said the key cards they were given for their hotel room also "kept cutting out" and this meant they would have to keep going down to reception to sort it.

He added: "Our key cards kept cutting out as well, so when you come back from going out and you put your key card in you have to go back downstairs and wait in a long line because several coaches might have come in just to get a new key card."

The carer said his dad also "did not really enjoy himself either".

Ryan said: "All together it was hot, it smelt damp, and the fire alarm kept going off every five seconds because it was so low and I don't know why but I think people were trying to go up the fire escape for a ciggie or something."
