Scots care home loses first resident to Covid-19 after staying virus free during first wave of pandemic

A Glasgow care home has been left devastated after losing its first resident to Covid-19 after staying clear of the virus during the first wave.

A number of staff and residents at David Cargill House, in the city’s West End, have recently tested positive for coronavirus and are now self-isolating.

One resident at the home has sadly lost their life after falling ill with the bug, management have now confirmed.

The home has issued their heartfelt condolences to all residents and families affected by the outbreak and stressed that health and safety remains their ‘top priority’.

A statement read: “It is with regret to note that at David Cargill House, we do have a number of our residents and staff diagnosed with Covid-19.

“Sadly, this has included one death. We offer our deepest condolences for the residents, family and friends and staff who have been affected by this.

“The staff at David Cargill House have been doing their utmost to provide compassionate care and support to our residents during these challenging times.

“We have been fortunate to have a robust and plentiful supply of Personal Protective Equipment PPE, which is used by staff in accordance with guidance.

“This effectively saw the delay in the transmission of the virus into our home and saw us remain free from Covid-19 from the outset of the pandemic until very recently.

“Staff and residents who are affected are isolating to help reduce the virus spreading in the home.

“The health and safety of our staff and residents is our top priority and as the Covid-19 crisis continues, we are committed to continually doing everything we can to respond quickly and effectively, whilst following the latest advice from the government."

A spokesperson for the Care Inspectorate said: “We are aware of suspected COVID-19 at this care service.

“We are in close contact with the care service and the local health and social care partnership.

“All of Scotland's social care sector is working tirelessly under very difficult circumstances to care for people during the pandemic and the Care Inspectorate is doing all it can to support them."
