Scots captain of killer trawler 'should have seen tiny boat' before fatal crash

A skipper who was busy texting when his trawler swamped four men on a fishing trip should have been able to see their tiny boat, an expert told a court.

David Brooks Marr, 53, of Peterhead, was captain of the Vertrouwen when the four friends on board the James 2 were washed overboard in August 2017.

Three of the men drowned.

Victims (L-R) Tralam Dumitrache, Irinel Popovici and Mircea Ilie (PA)

Coastguard enforcement officer Andrew Philips said the Maritime and Coastguard Agency carried out a reconstruction of the incident off Sussex.

He told Lewes Crown Court yesterday: “I’m satisfied the James 2 should have been visible from the Vertrouwen.”

Marr denies failing to set a proper watch.

The trial continues.
