Scots can get £1,500 to quit Instagram for three months in social experiment

Are you a self-confessed social media addict who wants to stop scrolling?

An intelligent learning platform is looking for three members of the public and will pay £1,500 – but only if you quit Instagram.

If you need a social media break and want to try something new, the role will involve replacing scrolling on the social media platform with learning a new skill for less than an hour a day.

HowNow is recruiting for the positions after a screen time study found the average adult spends 58 minutes a day on Instagram.

According to the job description, the chosen candidate must replace social media use with learning instead for three months.

The candidates will be able to work remotely, and choose what skills they learn - as long as it's not something they've done before.

This could be a new language, a musical instrument, coding or a creative hobby like sculpting.

HowNow will also provide the newly recruited team members with the resources and tools they need to study in their chosen skill, alongside £500 a month.

Each candidate will have three months to learn the skill, and will be expected to submit weekly reports on their progress.

At the end of the three months, the Study Contractors will need to present their new skill.

The job, where you must be aged 18 or over, will pay £500 a month during a three-month fixed contract.

Nelson Sivalingam, CEO and Co-Founder of HowNow, said: "When the UK's first lockdown was announced a little over a year ago, it seemed inevitable that we would turn to our devices as the primary view of the outside world and screen time would shoot up.

"And doom-scrolling Instagram has been one of the biggest offenders in that sense. However, with restrictions easing, now might be the time to focus our energy on something more productive.

"At HowNow our goal has always been to make learning in the workplace more relevant and engaging. However, it doesn't matter how relevant something is if you don’t make time for it, and I think we can all agree that social media can feel like a time parasite.

"You hear a lot about the '10,000 hours' theory, but we want to really put it to the test, and see just how proficient someone can get at a new hobby if they stop scrolling for just three months."

The closing date is May 7 so you better get applying if this sounds like something for you.

Members of the public can apply for the role of "Study Contractor" by heading to the HowNow website.
