Scots bride stops traffic in stunning wedding dress after coronavirus curfew cuts short celebration

A beaming bride whose wedding party ended early because of Covid-19 curfews was captured in a stunning snap on her special day.

Nicola Sturgeon retweeted the candid photo of Rowan McCabe, 21, laughing as she went to hail a taxi in Glasgow’s west end when her celebrations ended at 10pm.

The image, taken by photographer Wattie Cheung, was shared by the First Minister on Twitter yesterday and retweeted hundreds of times by followers.

Rowan and husband Jason McCabe, 31, from Milngavie, refused to let early pub closures ruin their day after revealing they had postponed their wedding four times during lockdown.

Speaking of the snap that has since gone viral, Rowan said: “It was surreal. We were leaving The Bothy at 10pm to get a taxi and I just heard the click of a camera and I just turned round and burst out laughing.

“I saw Wattie at my tail with his camera and he just snapped that one as I darted across the road to get over to the taxi rank.

“It was such an incredible, candid photo and it will be a great memory for both of us.

“I couldn’t believe it when I got an email from Wattie saying that the picture had gone viral.

“The next half an hour we were getting messages, emails and phone calls telling us Nicola Sturgeon had shared the picture and Ford Kiernan, from Still Game, had commented.”

The couple had tied the knot in a unique ceremony at whisky distiller Jason’s workplace Glengoyne – dubbed the most beautiful distillery in Scotland – in front of just 20 guests.

Rowan, a hairdresser, said: “We had to cancel our initial wedding day on May 2 and Friday was our fourth attempt at getting married. I had days where I’d cry as I never thought it was going to happen.

“That’s why we decided to just go with the date in September. It just became about getting married, that was the important thing.”

Jason added: “I promised Rowan I’d organise a day she wouldn’t forget – that’s what we had in the end.”
