Scots brewery ditches Wetherspoons after pub chain's staff wage snub

A Glasgow brewery has said it will no longer supply Wetherspoons’ pubs with its lager in response to the company's treatment of workers amid the coronavirus crisis.

Wetherspoons came under fire after owner Tim Martin failed to give his workers reassurances over wages while they were unable to go to work.

Martin sent a video to all of his staff where he suggested that they consider taking jobs up at Tesco to make up for the loss in pay.

WEST Brewery has now said that it would “rather sweep the streets than do business” with Martin in response to the video that circulated over social media, reports Glasgow Live.

One Twitter user asked the firm if they would reconsider allowing Wetherspoons to sell their beer in light of the video.

A spokesperson for WEST responded: “Don’t worry. We made that decision last week. We’d rather sweep the streets than do business with people like him.”

WEST’s response has been liked more than 120 times, with the response being warmly received by followers.

Willie Baird replied: “You were always my favourite beer now you’re just my favourite people.”

Lisajane Murray added: “Whoop whoop. Love you guys. Never change.”

Wetherspoons was criticised by thousands of people after the video emerged while MPs also slammed Martin over his stance.

One disgruntled member of the public even vandalised a shuttered entrance to one of the company's Glasgow pubs last week.

The graffiti read “pay up Tim” and “pay your workers”.

Martin had told staff they would not be paid until the Government programme started which cover 80% of the wages of workers during the crisis.

Wetherspoons later did a U-turn and agreed to pay around 43,000 workers the bulk of their wages while waiting for the Government bailout fund to kick in.
