Scots braced for 70mph winds as Indian summer brought to an end by Storm Aiden

Scotland’s Indian summer could soon be shattered – by the first named storm of the season.

Much of the country has recently basked in day-long sunshine, while nights have been notable for their plunging temperatures.

But this quiet autumn weather may soon be replaced by 70mph winds swept in by Storm Aiden.

The Met Office is tracking no fewer than three low pressure systems, expected to make landfall in the UK by Friday.

Each one of them has the capacity to deepen before it arrives, which would produce conditions demanding official weather warnings and the possibility of being named.

Vicky Mitchell of the Met Office said: “There is too much uncertainty at the moment to say for sure what will happen by the end of the week.

“We are tracking three low pressure systems. If one deepens sufficiently, it will probably produce a named storm.

“Whatever happens, we can be sure of wet and windy conditions going into next weekend.

“We can’t rule out winds of 70mph but it’s anything but certain at the moment.”

Today sees an end to the sunshine which has been a feature of Glasgow’s holiday weekend.

Cloud and rain is coming in before blue skies return on Tuesday.

Mitchell added: “It’s on Wednesday that we begin to see that unsettled weather appearing.

“Air from the north has produced lovely days and chilly nights but all that’s about to change.”
