Scots boss to leave world’s biggest miner earlier than planned

Andrew Mackenzie, the Scottish-born £1.3 million-a-year chief executive of the world’s biggest miner BHP is to leave the company three months earlier than planned.

The company said today that the handover process to new chief executive Mike Henry was running ahead of schedule and Mackenzie will now leave on 31 March instead of 30 June as originally planned.

“The board, Mr Mackenzie and Mr Henry are confident that the CEO transition is proceeding well and ahead of schedule with Mike Henry assuming the role of chief executive officer from January,” the company said in a statement.

Mackenzie, 62, who speaks five languages and who took the top job at BHP in 2013, grew up in Kirkintilloch and studied geology at the University of St Andrews. His career has seen him hold senior roles in BP and Rio Tinto.
