Tough Scots barmaid with 'never say die' attitude beats coronavirus despite underlying health conditions

A popular barmaid has beaten coronavirus despite suffering major underlying health conditions.

Tough Jackie Prentice overcame the odds after she was struck down with deadly Covid-19 ten days ago.

The 51-year-old, from Bo’ness, in West Lothian was already battling type-1 diabetes and a kidney condition when the virus struck.

At one stage as she lay in intensive care in the Forth Valley Hospital, her son, Justin, 25, parents Ian and Sandra, and partner, Ian Stewart were warned to expect the worst.

But since then, Jackie, a barmaid at the town’s Anchor pub, made an astonishing recovery and was due to return home last night.

Fighting back tears, her dad, Ian, thanked NHS staff for saving his daughter.

And he said he hoped her story of survival will give hope to others battling the disease.

He said: “Jackie has serious underlying health issues, so when she was rushed to intensive care we were very worried.

“We feared the worst and couldn’t sleep at nights worrying about her.

“But she’s proved that despite her conditions this virus can be beaten with a never say die attitude and help from fantastic doctors and nurses.”

Jackie was diagnosed with diabetes 44-years-ago and suffered serious kidney issues as a result.

Ian said only a handful of the drinkers in The Anchor knew she’d been rushed to hospital, but they will all be delighted she’s now on her way to a full recovery.

He added: “She’s a very popular barmaid and everyone knows her in the town and I’m sure they’ll all be happy she’s on the mend.

“We can’t thank the NHS staff enough - they have been absolutely fantastic throughout all of this.

“They are the true heroes of society.”
