Scots banned from visiting France without 'compelling reason' for trip

Scots have been banned from taking non-essential trips to France amid fears over the so-called Indian variant of coronavirus.

Anyone travelling to France from anywhere in the UK from today can only enter the country if they are able to provide “compelling reasons” for their visit.

EU Nationals and French residents will also be exempt from the rules.

Anyone able to enter France will have to take a Covid test before departure and quarantine for seven days on their arrival in the country.

UK Foreign Office officials said that the new rules apply for anyone arriving in France by air, car, ferry and train.

The move comes amid concerns over the so-called Indian variant of the virus, which has risen in numbers across the UK.

It is believed that the mutant strain of the virus, referred to as the April-02 variant in Scotland, is driving cases particularly in the south of Glasgow.

France is currently on Scotland’s ‘amber list’ as part of the rules on international travel.

Anyone travelling from France to Scotland must take a pre-departure Covid test and pay £170 on their second and eighth days into their return.

Travellers must self-isolate at home or in a place they have chosen for ten days.

An explanation of the new rules on the website of the Consulate General of France in London said: “Given the development of the so-called Indian variant, health measures have been tightened for people travelling to France from the UK.”

French officials are concerned about the spread of the so-called Indian variant, which is believed to be driving a rise in cases in Glasgow (PA)

It added that those who have been vaccinated against the virus are subject to the same rules.

Scots holidaymakers have been urged not to jet off to amber list countries for non-urgent reasons such as holidays.

Other countries included on the amber list include Spain, Germany and Italy.
