Scots bagpiping legend dies suddenly as loved ones say 'hearts are broken worldwide'

Dozens of heartfelt tributes have poured in for a Scots bagpiping legend who has sadly died aged just 47. John Elliott, also known as Jock, passed away on April 20 sending shockwaves through the global piping community.

The talented musician, who founded G1 Reeds in Kirkcaldy, Fife, in 2010, has been remembered for his ‘wealth of knowledge’ and ‘unwavering commitment’ to piping.

He has also been described as a “much loved husband, son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend who is missed every minute of every day”.

Paying tribute to the premier reed and chanter maker, Finlay MacDonald, Director of Piping at The National Piping Centre remarked on John's amazing contributions.

He said: “In this sad moment after the passing of John Elliott, the piping world must draw together in support of John’s family and friends, and simply be there for them.

“John was such a well respected and loved member of our community: his personality, musical talents and the quality piping products he developed have made an impact, and he will long be remembered.

“The thoughts and condolences from the team at The National Piping Centre go to John’s immediate family in their time of need.”

John was a member of the Grade 1 Inveraray & District Pipe Band, who won the World Pipe Band Championships twice in 2017 and 2019 while playing his G1 products.

The band said: “It was with the heaviest of hearts for all of us here at IDPB to learn that our friend and bandmate, John Elliott, has sadly passed away.

“John, or Jock as many knew him, has been a member of the band since 2013 and together we created and shared the most special of memories and times together.

“With a wealth of knowledge he helped shape and give invaluable advice to countless players that shared the ranks with him over the years and never failed to make us all laugh.

“We will be forever indebted to his unwavering commitment, the support he gave us and the friendships he created. We are thinking of his wife Pamela and the wider family and friends at this sad time.”

Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band, based in Canada, added: “Really devastating news from Scotland with the passing of G1 founder John Elliott.

“Thank you for years of support for DTSPB and cherished friendship. Well beyond special. “Hearts are broken worldwide. Forever young. Thank you Jock for all the memories.”

A celebration of John’s life will be held in Kirkcaldy on Thursday, May 25, with mourners asked to line the pavements on Dunnikier Road as pipers and drummers accompany the funeral procession.
