Scots B&B owner watched business collapse into river during Storm Ciara

A B&B owner told how he in horror as his business partially collapsed into a river during Storm Ciara.

Gino Antonacci was left devastated after the 200-year-old structure in Hawick in the Scottish Borders fell victim to the weather.

Parts of the Bridge House guest house and its neighbouring restaurant were washed away in the River Teviot.

The building was evacuated when cracks began to appear before the wall came down at around 9.30am on Sunday.

Gino said: “We had some signs of the wall going under the water.

“There were cracks coming in the wall, so we evacuated the premises.

“At night the river was very strong and high - and in the morning it just collapsed.”

Gino said the collapse came just months after renovation work had been carried out on the building.

He added: “It wasn’t very nice to see it, I have got to say that.”

Hawick is undergoing the introduction of a multi-million pound flood protection scheme due to be completed in 2022.

Gino said: “The building has been there for over 200 years. We have never had any problems before.

“There was a big flood in 2005 but it was just a big washout in the middle of the area, not particularly in my building.”

Gino added he had “no idea whatsoever” what was going to happen with the property.

Police said no-one was injured in the incident and the building had been cordoned off.

Scottish Borders Council said its building control officers were involved in assessing the damage.
