Scots artist 'Balesy' unveils festive Wallace and Gromit straw bale art

A local artist who goes by the moniker "Balesy" has unveiled her latest artwork - festive recreations of characters from Wallace and Gromit on straw bales standing over two metres high.

Fleur Baxter's Christmas-themed artworks depict the fictional Lancashire inventor as Santa Claus, alongside his loyal mutt sidekick in earmuffs and a scarf decorated with bones.

Alongside them is Shaun the Sheep in a Santa hat - while the villainous penguin Feathers McGraw's wanted poster adorns a fourth bale.

The penguin is known for his role in festive favourite The Wrong Trousers, while Shaun first appeared in A Close Shave before starring in his own spin-off series on the BBC, along with two movies.

Speaking to Dundee Live, Fleur said she had picked the Aardman Animation icons as her latest project because of their status as Christmas TV staples.

She said: "We went to Newcastle for my daughter's graduation from university with her Masters and walked past Fenwick's [department store].

"They had Wallace and Gromit in the window display and thought, 'That could be a go-er'.

"Everybody loves Wallace and Gromit especially at this time of year."

While spates of nasty weather delayed their creation Fleur was able to get the bales finished in time for Christmas.

Pictures of the display have since been shared far and wide on social media.

She added: "Last Christmas was really rubbish and I thought it would put a smile on people's faces."

Fleur is well known for her gargantuan grassy artworks, as she has been painting them on her family's farm in Monikie, just outside of Dundee, since 2014.

Among her past works are a pyramid of emojis, characters from Disney movies and local comic hero Dennis the Menace, his playful pup Gnasher and Dandy icon Desperate Dan.

She has even been commissioned to create straw bale versions of Marvel superheroes from the Avengers.

Her recreations of the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America went on display in the Borders village of St Abbs for this year's Halloween celebrations.

St Abbs stood in for the Norwegian town of Tønsberg in the 2019 blockbuster Avengers: Endgame.

A snap of Fleur's latest claymation-inspired creations was shared on Facebook by local photographer Ken le Grice, picking up over 2,000 likes.

Ken said of the straw standees: "They've always proved to be very popular - Fleur spends hours on them, chipping away at them come rain or shine."
