Scots art teacher battling Covid paints inspiring portraits of NHS heroes

An art teacher painted portraits of NHS heroes working on the Covid frontline while battling the virus herself.

Karin Hepburn, 52, was struck down with coronavirus after visiting her seriously ill dad last September.

She paid tribute to healthcare staff after hearing of the #portraitsfornhsheroes campaign at the start of lockdown.

It was the brainchild of Thomas Croft, who urged artists to paint free portraits of NHS staff to show gratitude for their efforts during the pandemic.

Now Karin’s work takes pride of place in the homes of the surgeons, doctors and the district nurse she captured.

Karin, from Newton Mearns, near Glasgow, said: “I thought that as an artist, taking part in the portrait campaign would be a good way for me to give something back to the NHS who were battling to save the lives of people affected by Covid.”

Renfrewshire GP Gouri Bhat and consultant husband Ram Kasthuri sent Karin their photo for her to paint.

Dr Bhat said: “We sent Karin a photo of us to draw from and what she created was so generous, special
and uplifting.”
