Scots areas are suffering water shortages with warnings issued for major cities

Scotland's water shortages continue with reservoir levels sitting at just 66 per cent of capacity.

Thurso and Orkney are affected badly and warnings have been issued for Edinburgh and Glasgow.

It has been the second driest summer in Scotland in more than 150 years and the dry and warm weather is set to continue.

According to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), Wick remains in ‘significant’ scarcity for water for the fifth week in a row.

Moderate scarcity also exists in Thurso and Orkney with the Outer Hebrides, parts of southern Scotland and areas in the northeast remaining at Alert.

Some areas in the south west and north have seen improvement but large cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow, are either on ‘alert’ or ‘early warning’ for drought conditions.

Demand for water is up to 100 million litres per day above average according to Scottish Water.

SEPA says: "We all have a role to play in managing our water environment. Businesses must follow conditions in abstraction permits but through the efficient use of water can save money and increase their resilience to the impacts of prolonged dry conditions.

"Your business should plan, monitor and record the water you use and meet the requirements of your abstraction permit."

The Met Office say the current heat is coming from the high pressure anchored over Scotland, which shows no sign of moving anytime soon.
