Scots are the best tippers in the UK - and Brummies the worst, study reveals

Time to bin the old jokes about Scots being tight-fisted – because they’re the best tippers in Britain.

And the worst are Brummies and Londoners.

A generous 98 per cent of Scots quizzed about tipping habits said they regularly gave money to waiting staff, hairdressers, cabbies and even food delivery drivers.

But while they topped a UK online poll, the West Midlands and the capital proved the meanest, with one in five in each never leaving a penny.

The study by online marketplace OnBuy.com found 88 per cent of Brits tip restaurant staff the traditional 10 to 15 per cent of the cost of a meal.

But while 83 per cent of men coughed up, only 72 per cent of women did.

The findings come as an Allocation of Tips Bill is going through Parliament after revelations that some restaurant chains were keeping hold of up to 10 per cent of staff gratuities.

OnBuy.com boss Cas Patton said: “I’m a Scot so I’m not surprised they tip well. The rest of the UK should do the same.”
