Five ambulance workers were assaulted in an "utterly unacceptable" attack in Ayr on Tuesday night.
Police officers raced to the incident on Wellington Square just before 11pm as they emphasised attacks on emergency services would not be tolerated.
The Scottish Ambulance Service head of service in Ayrshire and Arran, John Burnham, tweeted about the attack and said five members of his team were subjected to "very challenging behaviour" while responding to the incident.
He thanked Police Scotland for their quick response.
The post said: "Ambulance personnel do an amazing job in often difficult and challenging circumstances.
"They do it because they care. Appalled to find that 5 of my team had been subject to very challenging behaviour last night."
Luckily the workers did not sustain serious injuries during the incident and a 27-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection.
He was due to appear at Ayr Sheriff Court on Tuesday.
Chief Superintendent Faroque Hussain, Local Policing Commander, said: “Thankfully nobody has sustained serious injuries as a result of this incident but I would like to emphasise violence or any form of abusive behaviour is not part of our emergency service's job and it will not be tolerated.
“Our police officers and partners work tirelessly to keep our communities safe and any incidents of this nature will be dealt with robustly.”
In a Twitter post he added: "Assaults on emergency workers in #Ayrshire are on the rise. The debt of gratitude we owe to @Scotambservice @Scotfire_ENSA @AyrshirePolice has never been greater, so now more than ever, please treat them with respect.
"This is utterly unacceptable."
