Scots ambulance crew send diamond wedding gift to OAP with Covid but she tragically passes away days before anniversary

Two paramedics have been hailed as ‘truly selfless’ by the family of a Scots pensioner who tragically died just days before her 60th wedding anniversary.

Agnes Dey was treated by mercy crew members Joe Fallon and Grant Mortimer at her Bishopbriggs home on January 11 after she fell ill with Covid-19.

The 78-year-old repeatedly told the duo she had to make it home in time for the milestone celebration with her husband George, who has been battling cancer since last May.

Agnes was described as a 'lovely lady' by the two paramedics who treated her (Scottish Ambulance Service)

She was taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary where she bravely fought for her life but tragically died on January 15 - just five days before the couple’s big day.

Paramedic Joe arrived at the family’s home days after treating Agnes to hand over a card, flowers and champagne that he and his partner had purchased for the couple.

The family told how he ‘shed a tear’ when they were forced to tell him that Agnes had sadly passed away in hospital.

Daughter Suzanne said: “They took time and care to examine mum and reassure her before conveying her to hospital.

“During this time mum explained she had to get better as my dad has been fighting cancer since last May and she kept telling him he had to be here for their diamond anniversary on the 20th of January.

“They were so kind and caring and mum was happy to go with them. Unfortunately, mum did not survive Covid. We are all shocked and grieving so much.”

She continued: “On January 19, Joe turned up at my parents’ address with a bouquet of flowers, champagne and a beautiful 60th anniversary card from him and Grant.

“It was heartbreaking to tell him mum did not make it and he shed a tear and told us what a truly lovely lady my mum was.

“We are overwhelmed that in the midst of the daily challenges they deal with they took time out and remembered mum and dad’s special day.”

She described Joe and Grant as “truly selfless” and “wonderful people”, adding: “My mum would have been so touched by their generosity.

“No words can say what this act means to the family and we just want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts and they truly have represented the ambulance service and the NHS admirably.

“Thank you Joe and Grant for being such lovely caring people and going above and beyond for your patients.”
