Scots alternative dance band set to release debut single as live music is back

A Scottish five-piece alternative dance band look set to release their debut single next week.

Spiral Cities, based in Glasgow, are gearing up to release ‘Set You Free’, a song which blends dance, pop and indie tones together to deliver a modern and lively groove.

The band have created a unique sound incorporating elements of rock, pop and electronic dance music, tailoring their tunes for live performance and crowd interaction.

Formed in 2019, the band is made up of Scott Frank on keyboard/synths and lead vocals; Ross Dalziel and Andy Arthur on guitar and backing vocals; Fraser Haggerty on bass and backing vocals and Greg Conn on drums and backing vocals.

Scott, from Ayr, said: “We never came in with ‘this is the sound we want’ or ‘this is the band we want to support’; we were so focused on the stage show and wanting to put on a show that people can come and dance to.

“We all like to go to gigs but we don’t like to just stand and watch a band. It’s all about the show and the interaction with the crowd.

“With ‘Set You Free’ we use lyric repetition so the crowd can learn it quicker, we’ve got gang vocal so the crowd can sing it back and it’s quite easy to pick up on.

“It’s just wee hooks in and amongst the songs and that’s all been put there for playing live and to get people involved in the music and a performance as well.”

Guitarist Andy said: “There’s no set thing as to what ‘Set You Free’ is about, it’s up to your own interpretation.

“The main thing for us was we want listeners to dance – whether we play live or if people listen to the songs.

“We’ll maybe have one or two slow songs but we want to get people dancing.”

Drummer Greg added: “It’s very subjective; if people do take messages out the songs then that’s brilliant.

“I just want everybody to enjoy what we can put out, whether that be live or sitting there with your headphones on.

“It’s just about the enjoyment and actually listening to the music and taking it all in.”

‘Set You Free’, recorded and produced by Blair Crichton at 45 A-Side Recordings, is set for release on Wednesday, November 3.
