Scots airport among those hit with chaos as electronic passport gates crash across the UK

Edinburgh Airport was among those hit with chaos after electronic passport gates crashed across the UK.

Passengers at a number of airports and rail ports were left stuck in long, winding queues with little social distancing as Border Force struggled to process people.

Edinburgh Airport confirmed on Friday the issue had been causing longer waiting times.

They said: "Border Force colleagues are working to rectify an IT issue which is resulting in delays for arriving passengers.

"Passengers will still be able to pass through the Border but this will take a little longer than usual while the issue is resolved.

"Thanks for your patience."

Edinburgh Airport later added the issue was nationwide and they were working to resolve this as fast as possible.

The Home Office said the technical issue has been resolved, and they've been trying to minimise disruption.

Among those stuck in queues at London's Heathrow Airport was documentary film-maker Louis Theroux.

He tweeted: "Human logjam at Heathrow - apparently all the e gates at all the airports are down?

"That’s what the man just said."

Other people also took to social media to share their own experiences.

One person said: "Please get yourselves organised. We have been queuing outside customs in a holding queue for over half an hour, nowhere near the front and customs is full."

Another added: "Hours long queues just to get through to arrivals due to inadequate and incompetent boarder control processes."

A Home Office spokeswoman said: “This afternoon a technical issue affected eGates at a number of ports.

"The issue was quickly identified and has now been resolved.

"We have been working hard to minimise disruption, and apologise to all passengers for the inconvenience caused."
