Scots advised against travelling to parts of Turkey over security concerns

Scots are being warned on travelling to parts of Turkey this summer amid updated security concerns.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised against all travel to parts of the country due to an ongoing security situation.

The new advice to travellers was issued on June 18.

It advises to all but essential travel to Sirnak, Kilis, and Hatay provinces as well as the areas of Diyarbakir, Tunceli and Hakkari.

All regions are close to the Syrian border where tensions have risen over the last couple of months.

British nationals made over 2.3 million visits to Turkey in 2018.

A spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to areas within 10 km of the border with Syria, except the city of Kilis.

"British nationals made over 2.3 million visits to Turkey in 2018. Most visits are trouble free.

"Be alert to your surroundings and remain vigilant in crowded places popular with foreign nationals, including during festival periods."
