Scots actor Brian Cox insists his parenting skills are nothing like Succession character Logan Roy

Brian Cox says his parenting skills are nothing like his ruthless on-screen character.

The Dundee-born actor plays media mogul Logan Roy – who lets his children fight for control of his empire – in Succession.

Each one of them seems dependent on him and almost self-destruct trying to win his approval.

But dad-of-four  Brian, 74, has said that he doesn’t overly protect his own children and feels they should be “allowed to fail”.

Speaking on David Tennant Does A Podcast With…, he said: “My thing is not to protect my children. I differ from my wife in that.

“Having lived through failure as a child, big time, I get driven by the fact that I should be responsible and should set down boundaries and all that stuff but I’m hopeless. I’m useless at all that.

“But I also feel that children should be allowed to fail. You only really learn from failing. That is the story of my career – it was through my failures and things that I didn’t quite achieve that I learnt.

“Like how do I get over that hump and how do I negotiate the next part?”

Speaking from his home in New York, he added that he feels more in touch with Scotland the further he travels from the country but still loves going home.

He said: “I also feel more Scottish the further away I get. I love Scotland. I love it. I love the country, I love getting home.

“I loved it more as I got older. When I was younger, I used to look at the river Tay and couldn’t wait to get across it.

“But it grew to be the opposite and I’m very proud to be Scottish.

“I think about returning home – it’s one of my fantasies and a bit of a dream.”
